FORT WORTH — In the United States, nearly 300,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. According to the American Cancer Society, about 35,000 of them will not survive the disease. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men in the United States.

CBS Texas is proud to take a stand in the fight against cancer. Our community partners host an annual event called Wheels for Wellness, a car show that also offers screenings for men over 40. Dozens of vintage, muscle and classic cars line Main Street in downtown Fort Worth, and our partners at Texas Health offer free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing.

Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate grow uncontrollably.

Data from the American Cancer Society shows that the number of prostate cancer diagnoses has increased by 3% annually over the past decade. The rate of advanced prostate cancer has increased by 5% annually. Prostate cancer only occurs in men because women do not have a prostate gland. However, in a very small percentage of women, cancer can occur in glands such as the Skene's gland, which have a similar function to the prostate.

According to the National Institutes of Health, PSA screenings “have shown fewer deaths from prostate cancer in randomized trials.” These screenings remain “the most widely used and recommended screening test for early detection of prostate cancer.”

Wheels for Wellness is free to the public and PSA screenings are free for men over 40. Join Chief Meteorologist Scott Padgett for the awards ceremony and take a photo with Mobile 11. It's not a muscle car, but it's the next best thing: a storm chaser. Hope to see you there!
