McDonald's sells 50-cent burgers for National Cheeseburger Day

McDonald's is complementing its popular $5 menu with an even better deal: cheeseburgers for 50 cents.

For the second year in a row, the fast-food giant is offering a discount on one of its most popular menu items on National Cheeseburger Day. On September 18 only, customers can purchase the chain's famous Double Cheeseburger for 50 cents.

The offer is available to customers who use the fast food chain's smartphone app and is limited to one burger per customer.

Users who open the app will be prompted to take advantage of the National Cheeseburger Day promotion and the discount will then be automatically deducted at checkout.

McDonald's announced the return of the offer at the same time as announcing the $5 meal deal, which would remain in place through December. The combo deal, introduced this summer amid declining sales, includes a McDouble or McChicken sandwich, four McNuggets, small fries and a soft drink.

The Golden Arches offer competes with cheap combination offers from rival fast food chains such as Taco Bell, Burger King, Wendy's and Popeyes.

Guests looking to get the most bang for their buck on National Cheeseburger Day can also score a Wendy's Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger for 1 cent when purchasing any other menu item through the chain's app or website.

Burger King gives every member of its Royal Perks rewards program a free cheeseburger with a purchase of $1 or more.
