Driver arrested after Tulsa crash that left pedestrian dead and another injured

A pedestrian died and another was seriously injured in an accident at the intersection of 71st Street and Yale Avenue in Tulsa on Tuesday afternoon after a vehicle ignored a red light, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 1:25 p.m. when a white Honda Accord, driven by 28-year-old Nicholas Stewart, was traveling westbound on 71st Street and ran a red light, according to Tulsa police. At the same time, a maroon Kia Optima entered the intersection on a green light and struck the Honda on the passenger side.

The impact caused the Honda to lose control and cross the median.

Two pedestrians who were standing on the median strip asking for donations were hit by the Honda. One pedestrian died at the scene, the other was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Stewart was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. He was booked into the Tulsa County Jail. Stewart is a tribal citizen, meaning that his case falls under the jurisdiction of the federal or tribal courts following the McGirt ruling.
