Student arrested after ‘altercation’ at San Rafael Middle School – Marin Independent Journal

A juvenile was arrested in connection with violence at Davidson Middle School, authorities said.

The incidents occurred on September 12 and 13. Carmen Ghysels, superintendent of San Rafael City Schools, described at least one of the incidents as a “physical altercation” in a letter to the school community on Tuesday.

For privacy reasons, she did not want to reveal any details.

“You may be aware that there were incidents both on and off campus last week, including a physical altercation during lunch on Thursday involving multiple students,” Ghysels said in the letter. “In collaboration with district and school administration, and with the assistance of SRPD, we began to investigate based on our initial information and took appropriate disciplinary action.”

The police did not want to provide any further details.

“Criminal charges are being filed for several of the other individuals involved in the two cases under investigation,” said San Rafael Police Sergeant Justin Graham. “The charges have been and will be forwarded to the Marin County District Attorney's Office.”

Ghysels said she met with some of the affected families this week. She said the incidents were part of a growing trend of violence online, in schools and in society.

“Fighting, violence and hatred will not be tolerated at Davidson,” she said. “We take all reports of threats or violence seriously and make every effort to maintain a safe and orderly learning environment for all.”
