Chappell Roan threatens to quit music if fame “someday becomes dangerous”

“Hot to Go!” singer Chappell Roan is considered one of the up-and-coming pop stars of 2024.

But the “Midwest Princess,” who won Best New Artist at the MTV VMAs last week, has already had enough of what she calls the “abusive” side of fame.

“I think fame is just abuse,” Roan, 26, told The Face in a new cover story. “The vibe of it – stalking, talking shit on the internet, [people who] doesn't leave you alone and yells at you in public – that's the charisma of a violent ex-husband.

“This is how it feels. I didn't know it would feel this bad.”

She has already set clear limits for herself through the intrusive and aggressive behavior of her fans.

“I told myself if it ever got dangerous, maybe I'd quit,” Roan said. “Now it's dangerous, and I'm still going. But this part is not what I signed up for.”

Roan described an incident at the airport that she said was particularly disturbing.

“I get out of the car, it's 5:30 in the morning, and there are two guys waiting with a bunch of posters and stuff that I'm supposed to sign,” she told The Face. “I know they're not fans. I said no. I said, 'I'm not signing anything at the airport, sorry.'”

But the harassment did not end there.

“[One of them] follows me to the TSA line, starts yelling at me, and everyone turns around and looks,” she explained. “He says something like, 'You should really be humble. Do you know where you are? Don't forget where you came from.'”

The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer was surprised by the encounter: “I just thought: 'What the hell is going on here?'”

Shaken by the events, Roan ended up crying in the airport bathroom and texted “Royals” singer Lorde to ask for advice.

“She sent me a list of things to do [in that situation],” Roan said. “She literally wrote down eight things she wished someone had told her when she was going through this. And she went through hell. She was a baby!”

Roan has also struck up a friendship with Sabrina Carpenter, another rising pop star adjusting to newfound fame after a scorching summer.

“Nobody understands that it really all comes back to you,” she said of her sympathy for the “Espresso” singer. “Nobody understands that, except other artists … Sabrina [Carpenter] even texted me, 'Hey, I feel crazy. I know you feel crazy.' So it's like girls leaning on each other.”

Roan — who will release a deluxe vinyl edition on Friday to mark the one-year anniversary of her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess — has also received support from everyone from Lady Gaga and Charli XCX to Lizzo and Katy Perry.

“They supported me immediately,” Roan said of her fellow pop divas. “It was so incredible because I'm very scared and confused.”
