Jim Caviezel returns for “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection”

After years of discussion and development, the continuation of The Passion of Christ Filming on “The 4000” is reportedly set to begin in 2025. According to Italian news agency Italpress, director Mel Gibson is currently in Malta with a production team to scout possible filming locations for The Passion of Christ: Resurrectionin which Jim Caviezel once again takes on the role of Jesus.

Other reported filming locations include Israel and Morocco. Francesco De Vito, who played Peter in the original, is expected to return alongside Caviezel.

The Passion of Christ, The film premiered in 2004, grossed over $600 million at the box office, and received three Oscar nominations. Since then, Gibson has expressed interest in continuing the story. The script has reportedly been revised several times by Randall Wallace, a writer who worked with Gibson on the original film, for which he received an Oscar nomination. In a 2022 interview, Gibson described the sequel as a non-linear narrative that “takes place in the past and in other worlds, and that’s kind of like a bit of science fiction.” This led to speculation that The Passion of Christ: Resurrection would possibly include a depiction of Jesus' time in hell as described in the Catholic faith.
