Dent Schoolhouse introduces supervisory policy after shooting incident

Dent Schoolhouse is implementing a chaperone policy after a nearby shooting call forced operations to halt opening weekend operations. “Producing a safe and entertaining show has always been our top priority at Dent Schoolhouse. Across the entertainment industry, we have seen an increase in cases of disorderly and inappropriate behavior,” a statement on the website said. Under the chaperone policy, all guests ages 15 and younger must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old to be admitted to the property. Officials say the policy applies to all events. The adult chaperone must bring and show an ID with a date of birth to enter the property. The policy allows for one chaperone for every five or fewer guests ages 15 and younger per night. The chaperone must be with their group during the line, but does not need to enter the attraction; instead, they must remain on the property until their group is finished. Guests 16 and older may be asked to show a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, national ID or passport. If the guest cannot prove their age, they may be denied entry. Guests under 15 found without a chaperone may be ejected from the premises. “We believe these changes will help ensure Dent Schoolhouse continues to have a fun/positive atmosphere for all haunted enthusiasts looking to enjoy a night of Halloween fun,” a statement on the website said. The policy was implemented after shots were fired down the street at the popular West Side Halloween attraction Saturday night. According to a statement from Green Township police on Facebook, multiple police agencies responded to reports of shots fired on Harrison Road near Dent Schoolhouse around 10:18 p.m. Saturday. No one was struck by the gunfire. Police said a suspect is believed to have pulled out a firearm during an argument and then fired several shots. In the statement, they added that they “dislodged several unruly juveniles and young adults from the area” when they arrived at the scene. The Green Township police statement also said that several suspects were identified and the firearms used in the shooting were recovered. A Green Township police officer told a WLWT photographer Saturday night that security officers at the Dent Schoolhouse first reported hearing the gunshots nearby. The officer added that shell casings were also recovered at the scene. The schoolhouse had just opened the night before for its first Halloween night. Scanner traffic indicates that the incident appears to have occurred largely in an area around the nearby Buffalo Wild Wings and Kroger, but officers have not confirmed this. Police say no arrests have been made. The incident remains under investigation.
