Bail denied for registered sex offender for assaulting Clemson student

ANDERSON COUNTY, SC (FOX Carolina) – A registered sex offender accused of assaulting a Clemson University student and stealing her car was denied bail Thursday morning.

Officials said 57-year-old Darrell Scott Brooks, a registered sex offender in Oconee County who was recently released from prison, was taken to the Anderson County Detention Center on Sept. 18.

Previously, authorities say Brooks posed as a university employee at an off-campus apartment complex on Sept. 10 and asked a Clemson student for a ride. Brooks and the victim were on their way to Anderson when he forced her into a church parking lot and attacked her.

Officials said Brooks fled in the car when a passerby helped the victim escape.

The Oconee County Sheriff's Office said they spotted the victim's stolen Audi in the Westminster area. An Oconee County officer attempted to stop the car but said Brooks sped away and a chase began.

Officials said Brooks was taken into custody after he crashed into an embankment and attempted to flee the scene.

Brooks faces a long list of charges, including assault with intent to commit a sexual offense and kidnapping. Officials said he is a registered sex offender in Oconee County and was recently released from prison.

At Thursday's hearing, the judge denied Brooks bail and said he would issue a restraining order against the victim and her family.
