Authorities investigate reported threat at two Nipomo schools

(UPDATE: 3:12 p.m.) – District officials say school closure and pickup will occur as usual Thursday, as will sports and extracurricular activities. However, sports with an earlier school closure have been postponed.

According to officials, authorities are still on campus.

“We know today has been difficult and we truly appreciate your support as the safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” district officials said. “We take every threat seriously and will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to assist them in their investigations.”

UPDATE (1:00 p.m.) – Both schools were still in quarantine as of 1:00 p.m. Thursday while authorities conducted a full search of the campus.

UPDATE (11:46 a.m.) – Students, staff and faculty at Nipomo High and Central Coast New Tech continued to shelter in place until shortly before noon Thursday.

District officials say Nipomo High School received the online threat.

“In cooperation with law enforcement, they decided to conduct a full search of the campus,” officials said, adding that it would not be a quick process.

District officials say students will be provided with meals and will be able to use the restroom.

People are still being told to stay off campus.

ORIGINAL STORY: Due to a reported threat, people were told to avoid two schools in Nipomo Thursday morning.

Lucia Mar Unified School District officials said they contacted authorities after receiving a report of an online threat, and Nipomo High School and Central Coast New Tech subsequently went into “Secure in Place” mode.

As of 10:43 a.m., police forces were reportedly on site and restricted access to schools.

District officials say students and staff are safe in classrooms, adding, “Student safety is our concern.”
