79-year-old pilot survives plane crash in Virginia

A 79-year-old Fredericksburg man was seriously injured when his plane crashed in Fauquier County Thursday afternoon, according to Virginia State Police.

State police responded to the crash at about 3:27 p.m. in the 14500 block of Spring Mill Road. The pilot, who was the only person on board, was attempting an emergency landing in a field when his single-engine Cessna collided with several trees, authorities said.

The pilot suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was flown to Fairfax Inova Hospital for treatment. No one on the ground was injured in the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and are investigating the incident.

According to Sergeant Brent W. Coffey, spokesman for the Culpeper Division of the Virginia State Police, the investigation is ongoing.
