Billy Crystal delivers an unrealistic update for the characters from When Harry Met Sally

Presumably because he can sense Hollywood award ceremonies like some dogs can sense earthquakes, Billy Crystal appeared at the Emmys on Sunday to present the award for outstanding talk series. City people The star also used the opportunity to wax nostalgic about his first Tonight Show appearance before reprimanding each nominated host for canceling previous dinner plans.

Before the event, Crystal walked the red carpet and was asked by E! Live from the Red Carpet Presenter Laverne Cox to Harry and Sallythe popular 1989 romantic comedy in which Crystal and Meg Ryan play two best friends who eventually fall in love – probably because Harry's sweater skills just can't be topped.

The whole thing ends with Harry running off to a New Year's Eve party to meet Sally, where they express their true feelings for each other. And in the final moments of the film, we learn that the couple married just three months later.

Clearly Harry and Sally was well received by audiences, as Crystal is still being asked about it now. In particular, Crystal was asked by Cox what the title characters would be up to today. “They'd be talking about downsizing. They're not ready for assisted living,” Crystal joked. “But they're still romantic, still in love. They're probably having a great time with their grandchildren and finding new ways to get along.”

And presumably these “new ways of being together” include regular trips to the deli.

This is certainly an optimistic view. Despite its place in the romantic comedy canon, some viewers have confessed that When Harry Met Sally were perhaps not right for each otherafter all. Would their relationship have really lasted the last 35 years?

Amazingly, the relationship between Harry and Sally almost didn't last the entire length of the film. As director Rob Reiner revealed earlier this year, “The original ending of the film was that Harry and Sally didn't get together.” Why? Because, by Reiner's own admission, he was unable to make a film that didn't end in bitterness and deep loneliness.

“I was married for 10 years, single for 10 years and couldn’t imagine how I would ever be with anyone, and that’s how Harry and Sally”, Reiner recalled during an episode of the CNN show Who is speaking to Chris Wallace?“I hadn't met anyone, and so it happened that the two of them met again after years, talked to each other and then separated.”

Fortunately for fans of films that don't disappoint so much, Reiner met his future wife during filming and “changed the ending.”

Although the film’s screenwriter, Nora Ephron, died in 2012, we simply accept Crystal’s red carpet quips as Harry and Sally Canon and proclaim that love is not dead after all.
