REMINDER: Republicans in Congress' plans to raise prescription drug prices for seniors are straight out of Donald Trump's Project 2025 playbook

While Donald Trump’s MAGA supporters in Congress follow in his footsteps and give preference to the pharmaceutical industry over American seniors, DNC national press secretary Emilia Rowland issued the following statement:

“The plans of Republicans in the House and Senate to raise drug prices for Medicare beneficiaries are copied and pasted directly from Donald Trump's Project 2025 playbook. Trump's Republican Party is putting the CEOs of Big Pharma above America's seniors by trying to roll back health care and prescription drug cost savings for millions of Americans. Trump and his MAGA minions' plans to repeal the Biden-Harris Inflation Reduction Act – which already saves seniors thousands per year – would result in price increases for over 18 million Americans. Seniors deserve a leader who will stand up to Big Pharma and fight for them, and the only candidate in this race who will stand up to America's seniors is Kamala Harris.”

Recent reports on MAGA Republicans' plan to repeal Medicare price negotiations under the IRA show that they care more about pandering to the pharmaceutical industry than helping American seniors pay for the prescription drugs they need.

Axios: “State Republican Party wants to break off talks on drug prices”

“The big picture: Tensions came to light this week when several high-ranking Republicans told Axios they want to repeal Medicare drug price negotiations under the Inflation Reduction Act next year if they win the elections.

“What they say: ‘I would try to remove and replace thatbut I can't tell you exactly what it will be yet.' Senator Mike Crapo (Republican of Idaho), who is in line to become the next chairman of the Senate Finance Committee if Republicans win the Senate majority, Axios said when asked about the drug pricing talks.

  • Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) said the IRA drug pricing provisions were “The worst legislation I have seen in the last 10 years in Congress and 10 years in the State Legislature' and he wants to abolish it “absolutely”
  • Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) he said “100%” wants to repeal the negotiation provisionswhile other sections of the drug pricing law would have to be evaluated on whether they have a 'positive impact on business.'”

Politico: “This is despite Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell frequently referred to the Medicare negotiations as “prescription drug socialism,” and no Republican voted for the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. which made the negotiations possible.

“But the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives, including Spokesman Mike Johnson called it price fixing, as did the Republican National Committee. and said it threatened future cures.”

Republicans in the House and Senate have taken their plans to raise drug prices for Medicare beneficiaries directly from Donald Trump's extremist “Project 2025.”

Center for American Progress: “The Project 2025 drug plan would increase costs for up to 18.5 million seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries”

“Project 2025's 'Mandate for Leadership: A Conservative Promise' calls for repeal of the Inflation Reduction Act. Likewise, the Republican Study Committee's budget proposal for fiscal year 2025, 'Fiscal Sensibility to Save America,' calls for a complete repeal of the law. When the project is implemented in 2025, millions of Medicare beneficiaries will see an increase in their out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs. “which will erase much-needed savings achieved through the Medicare Part D reforms of the Inflation Reduction Act and other provisions.”

Center for American Progress: “Project 2025’s Medicare changes would limit older Americans’ access to health care and jeopardize the program’s financial health”

Mandate for Leadership (Project 2025), p. 365: “Support the repeal of massive spending laws such as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)”

Trump’s only “concept of a plan” for health care is his “Project 2025” agenda, which includes: Rollback of health care and prescription drug cost-cutting measures for millions of Americans.

CNN: “Trump now says he is open to cuts to social services, including Medicare”

Vox: “Trump said he would not cut Medicaid, Social Security and Medicare. His 2020 budget includes cuts to all three.”

“2019 and 2020: Trump proposed budgets that included hundreds of billions of dollars in Medicare cuts.”

Daily Beast: “Trump to revive plan to repeal Obamacare if elected in 2024”

NBC News: “Trump, on the other hand, reiterated his support for a Supreme Court lawsuit seeking to invalidate Obamacare. The justices will hear the case a week after Election Day.

“I want to end Obamacare, “Develop a brand new, wonderful health care system,” Trump said at the debate moderated by NBC News' Kristen Welker.

Rolling Stone: “As Rolling Stone has detailed, Project 2025's proposed agenda is radically right-wing. One point hidden in the 887-page draft has received little attention so far but would have enormous implications for the health of America's seniors and the future of one of America's most popular social programs: a call to make Medicare Advantage the default enrollment option for people newly eligible for Medicare.

“Such a policy would accelerate the end of the traditional Medicare programand its fundamental premise: that seniors can go to any doctor or health care provider they choose.”
