Kentucky sheriff charged after judge shot in courthouse | US News

A police officer in Kentucky is suspected of shooting a district judge after an argument in a courthouse.

Judge Kevin Mullins was in his district office when he was shot shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday, reportedly during an argument with Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines.

Stines, who has held the office for eight years, has been charged with murder, police said.

The motive for the shooting has not yet been disclosed, but state police said there was an argument between the two.

Investigators are now trying to “get answers as to what led to the actual shooting,” State Trooper Matt Gayheart said at a press conference this evening.

Judge Mullins died at the scene and Stines surrendered without incident.

According to a Letcher County website, Judge Mullins' jurisdiction included cases involving domestic violence, traffic offenses and incidents involving juveniles.

When Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced X's death, he said, “There is far too much violence in this world and I pray there is a path to a better future.”
