Man charged with murder of 11-year-old in 2021 double shooting

Tyler Williams, 22, has been charged with Nathan's murder. He is already serving a prison sentence of 10 to 13.5 years for injuring Nathan's 14-year-old brother Miguel.

TOLEDO, Ohio – A Lucas County grand jury on Thursday returned indictments against a man accused of shooting 11-year-old Nathan Sumner and wounding his 14-year-old brother in 2021.

Tyler Williams, 22, was charged with one count each of aggravated murder, murder, aggravated assault and discharging a firearm on or near a prohibited premises.

Williams is already serving a prison sentence of 10 to 13.5 years after taking a plea deal last year for injuring Nathan's brother Miguel in the August 2021 shooting.

The two Sumner boys were shot in the head while playing basketball in front of their home in the 300 block of Austin Street in north Toledo.

The boys were taken to the hospital and Nathan died two days later. According to court documents, Miguel suffered permanent brain damage from the shooting.

Marquise Figures, 18, a second suspect accused in the shooting, was sentenced to 20 to 24 years in prison in August of this year after withdrawing his previous plea of ​​not guilty and then pleading guilty to manslaughter and attempted murder charges.

At the time of the shooting, the number was 15.
