16-year-old boy arrested and charged with murder after shooting mother in New York

A 16-year-old boy was arrested and charged with murder on Thursday, more than a week after a Big Apple mother was shot dead in front of her family during a brutal robbery, police said.

The teenager, whose identity has not been disclosed, also faces charges of burglary, robbery and illegal possession of weapons in connection with the shooting of 57-year-old nurse Ying Zhu Liu, police said.

Sources told The Post that two other young suspects are still being sought.

Liu was killed shortly after 11 p.m. on September 9 in the eighth-floor hallway of her building in Lower Manhattan.

Authorities said last week that two suspects wearing black ski masks followed the victim's 61-year-old husband into the building and into the elevator, where they attempted to rob him.

When the son witnessed the robbery on the eighth floor, he tried to intervene, but was hit with a pistol by one of the suspects, according to sources.

Liu then heard the struggle and stepped forward with a stick to confront the assailants before she was shot in the face.

The robbers allegedly stole Liu's husband's cell phone before fleeing.

“It's all surreal,” Liu's distraught 32-year-old son Lin Rong Yan told The Post last week. “All I feel right now is sadness.”
