Sources say Sean 'Diddy' Combs is on suicide watch while awaiting trial (exclusive)

Sources tell PEOPLE that Sean “Diddy” Combs is on suicide watch while he waits at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

Combs, 54, was arrested at a Manhattan hotel on Monday evening, September 16. The indictment was released the next day, charging him with sex trafficking, organized crime and transportation for the purpose of prostitution.

He was transferred to MDC on Tuesday, September 17, after pleading not guilty and being denied bail twice this week. It is unknown if Combs is suicidal or how long he will be on suicide watch. Sources tell PEOPLE it is preventative measures because Combs is in shock and his mental state is unclear.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice's National Institute of Corrections, suicide watch is “supervision of inmates at risk of suicide who require frequent observation.”

PEOPLE has reached out to the Bureau of Prisons and SDNY.

During a court hearing, Combs' attorney, Marc Agnifilo, asked a judge to transfer the music mogul to a prison in Essex County, New Jersey. The decision was ultimately left to the Bureau of Prisons.

PEOPLE has contacted Combs' attorneys for comment.

The MDC, which houses 1,600 inmates—many of them awaiting trial—is known to be dangerous and understaffed, and has a high rate of deaths and suicides. In their motion to release Combs on bail, his lawyers wrote that “several courts in this district have recognized that the conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center are not suitable for pretrial detention,” according to The Daily Beast.

“Just this summer, an inmate was murdered,” the legal team added. “In the last three years, at least four inmates have committed suicide there.”

The indictment against Combs accuses him of forcing victims to perform “freak-offs,” which prosecutors describe as “elaborate and staged sex performances.”

He allegedly used his fame and influence, as well as drugs such as cocaine, ketamine and oxycodone, to coerce and intimidate women into joining the “freak offs.” In addition, the “freak offs” were sometimes captured on video without the victims' knowledge. Federal investigators seized three AR-15 rifles and 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant when they raided his homes in Miami and Los Angeles in March.

Another conference hearing for Diddy is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24th at 10 a.m.
