Sheriff allegedly shot judge in Kentucky courthouse

Police are investigating a fatal shooting at a southeastern Kentucky courthouse Thursday afternoon. The shooting occurred at the Letcher County Courthouse, about four hours southeast of the Cincinnati area. According to Kentucky State Police, a district judge in Letcher County was shot and killed in his office around 3 p.m. Thursday. In an update Thursday evening, Kentucky State Police Trooper Matt Gayheart confirmed the deceased judge was 54-year-old Kevin Mullins. According to KSP, Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines was arrested in connection with the shooting and charged with murder. Police said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing. On Thursday, the Kentucky Court of Justice released a statement that said, in part, “The Kentucky Court of Justice is aware of a tragic incident that occurred today in Letcher County. We are currently in contact with law enforcement, including the Kentucky State Police, and offer our full support during this difficult time. While the investigation is ongoing, we are committed to assisting in any way we can.”After the shooting was reported, nearby schools in Letcher County were briefly locked down. Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman said his office would work with a prosecutor in the area as a special prosecutor in the case. “We will fully investigate the case and work for justice,” Coleman said on social media.
