One lane of I-26 has reopened after an accident closed westbound lanes overnight

An accident closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 26 north of Asheville on Thursday evening, disrupting rush hour traffic on Friday morning.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) said the crash occurred at mile marker 23 around 10:11 p.m. Thursday. One lane was reopened around 9 a.m. The NCDOT said the right lane of I-26 West remains closed and is expected to reopen around noon.

A News 13 photographer on the scene Thursday night said it appears two cars were involved in an accident near the Old Marshall Highway Bridge, and one vehicle may have gone over the guardrail.

DETOUR:

Motorists are advised to take Exit 23 (US 19 BUS), turn right, then left onto Weaverville Road (US 19 BUS), then left onto New Stock Road to rejoin I-26 West.
