16-year-old arrested for murder of wife who defended her husband

A teenager has been arrested for the murder of a 57-year-old New York woman who came to her husband's aid during a robbery.

ABC7 reports that the 16-year-old could not be publicly identified due to his age. Prosecutors charged the boy with murder, illegal possession of a firearm and burglary.

According to CBS New York, two boys followed Ying Zhu Liu's husband into his apartment building and up to the eighth floor where he lives.

The 61-year-old husband said two suspects tried to rob him in the hallway. His son, who had been waiting for his father at the elevator, tried to stop the teenagers but was hit with a pistol. Then Liu came out of the apartment with a stick after hearing the commotion.

The husband says the suspects shot her in the face.

According to Gothamist, the teens stole a cell phone and $100. This is the second arrest of a teenager for murder this week. A 15-year-old is on trial for the murder of 66-year-old William Alcindor in Queens.
