“Transformers One” grossed $26 million at launch

FRIDAY LUNCH: Well, that was not to be expected, but it is still early in the weekend. Transformers One is currently slower than expected for a 26 million USD Opening of a 9.7 million USD on its first day (including $3.36 million in previews) in 3,978 theaters. The Josh Cooley-directed film from Paramount Hasbro Entertainment is clearly a family film, and the question remains whether more of them will be released tomorrow. The same goes for all the walk-in traffic from Hispanic and Latino viewers, who gave the cartoon its highest score of 93% last night; the demo version accounted for 33% of the film's sales, one spot behind Caucasians. Note that K-12 schools only have 5% off today.

Warner Bros.' third week of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is not far behind with a third weekend of USD 24.75 million-52%, from 4,172 locations after grossing $6.75 million on Friday. The total through Sunday will be $225.6 million, making the film the second-highest-grossing September opening of all time at the domestic box office, behind the 2017 film. It at 328.8 million USD and before the year 2021 of the Disney/Marvel Studios Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with 224.5 million dollars. It is probably the highest grossing film for Jenna Ortega in a story role at the domestic box office, apart from her supporting role as the Vice President's daughter in Iron-Man 3 (409 million USD).

Third place goes to Blumhouse/Universal's second weekend of Speak no evil with 5.7 million USD-50%, after a second Friday of $1.7 million and a ten-day total 21.2 million USD until Sunday.

Lionsgate's $20 million horror film Halle Berry could be in fourth place Never let go in 2,667 theaters with $1.45 million today and between 3 million USD To 4.25 million USD for the weekend. The added advantage of this film over Mubi's Demi Moore-Margaret Qualley Body Swap genre picture The substance is that they have run TV ads, while the latter's campaign was mostly digital, reaching the middle of the country. But that doesn't say much about this launch.

Fifth is the ninth picture from Disney/Marvel Studios Deadpool and Wolverine at 2,450 with 1 million USD Today, 4 million USD (-23%) for the weekend and a total of $627.4 million. On Sunday, the film will open 1% behind Disney/Pixar's Inside Out 2 At the same time, this film grossed a total of $652.6 million domestically.

The substance is targeting $1.75 million today, including previews, for a $3.3-3.5 million Premieres at 1,949 locations. I heard the P&A spend for the film was under $10 million, mostly digital.

FRIDAY MORNING: The first animated Transformers Film in almost four decades, Transformers Oneby Paramount and Hasbro Entertainment achieved a 3.36 million USD from the fan shows on Wednesday (7 p.m.) and the previews on Thursday (5 p.m.).

This figure exceeds a number of family film previews, including Paramount’s IF (1.75 million USD), The Garfield Movie (2.3 million USD)Trolls join forces and even the live-action spinoff Transformers film Bumblebee, which grossed $2.15 million in 2018.

Transformers One opens today in 3,978 domestic theaters, including Imax and PLF, and was expected to open around $34 million. Don't be surprised if the film makes $40 million or more. Post-show polls from Screen Engine/PostTrak are strong, with 5 out of 5 stars and a strong 75% recommend. Thursday night's audience was 72% general audience, 13% parents (mostly dads at 56%) and 15% kids under 12 (mostly boys at 73%). Transformers One Cost: USD 75 million before P&A.

The industry needs a new theatrical distributor, and Mubi is making a splash with its acquisition of Universal/Working Title. The substance, which shaped 512,000 US dollars in previews, consisting of Wednesday showings at 7 p.m. in 785 theaters, and an additional $327,000 in previews in 1,455 theaters on Thursday night starting at 4 p.m. The substance is booked in 1,949 theaters and is expected to gross $3 million. The film could bring in even more, especially with 88% certified reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and 83% audience ratings (PostTrak 80%) and 4 stars for the 2 hour and 21 minute body swap genre film starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. The substance cost $17.5 million at Universal. Mubi bought the film worldwide for, as far as I know, $12.5 million. Thursday night's audience was 62% male and 64% 18-34.

Remember how Lionsgate had a dud last weekend in The murderer’s game, what ended up being the worst start to Dave Bautista's solo career? This film made $300,000 in previews last Thursday before going on to gross $2.68 million in three days (and $3.8 million in the week). It looks like Halle Berry's horror film Never let go is also heading for a lull with 360,000 US dollars Previews. The studio believes it will gross $4 million to $7 million in 2,667 theaters. Not if you compare it to The killer's game. Note that Berry has the opportunity to guarantee an opening of a certain size before the weekend begins: the now very defunct small distributor Aviron saved her film Kidnap and opened in August 2017 with $10 million, which was met with great praise in the industry at the time. In the US, the film closed with just under $31 million. Never let go, out of Crawling Filmmaker Alexandra Aja, was made for $20 million, as far as I know. The reviews are 56% bad. PostTrak on Thursday night had 3 stars and 67%. Yuck. The audience was mostly men (58%), 42% 18-34 year olds.

In the meantime, Warner Bros. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has exceeded the two hundred mark with USD 200.8 million after a 2.48 million USD Thursday (-14% compared to Wednesday) for a second week of USD 64.4 million-53%, in 4,575 cinemas.
