Police: Man arrested after woman was held hostage in Columbia store

COLUMBIA, Missouri (KMIZ)

Officers used a Taser to subdue and arrest a man at a Columbia store on Friday after he allegedly took a woman hostage.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m., police were called to the 100 block of Conley Road for a report of an armed man making threats, according to a Columbia Police Department news release. Officers learned at the scene that the suspect had entered an unnamed business in the 90 block of Conley Road, the news release said. A CPD spokesman said he could not provide the name of the business.

Police then saw 39-year-old Rico Marshall leaving the store, the press release said.

Marshall went back inside and took a woman hostage after seeing police, CPD said. Officers “took decisive action” to arrest him, including using a taser, the news release said. None of the bystanders were injured and the hostage was unharmed.

Marshall was arrested on suspicion of first-degree kidnapping, two counts of fourth-degree assault and resisting arrest, CPD said.

No charges had been filed in online court records late Friday night, and Marshall's photo was not available on the Boone County Sheriff's website.
