San Diego Police: Clairemont Mesa man murdered his mother – NBC 7 San Diego

A Clairemont Mesa man was arrested Friday on suspicion of stabbing his mother to death in their home near Tecolote Canyon, authorities said.

According to San Diego police, 30-year-old Jamal Aytes was taken into custody Thursday evening after being taken to a hospital for treatment of cuts on his hands.

Several hours earlier, the suspect had called police to report that his mother, 60-year-old Jacqueline Aytes, had “suffered a nervous breakdown” in their apartment in the 7300 block of Mesa College Drive and threatened him with a butter knife, SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell said.

“She was evaluated and found not to meet the criteria for a psychiatric evaluation,” Campbell said. “Her son was not present at the time and officers did not [conclude] that a crime had taken place.”

After a hospital worker reported that Jamal Aytes was being treated for suspicious injuries, officers returned to his apartment to check on his welfare. After entering the apartment, they found his mother dead inside from apparent stab wounds, Campbell said.

Police said the suspect would face murder charges after his release from the hospital.
