Lucy Letby plans to appeal against attempted murder conviction

Child serial killer Lucy Letby will attempt to challenge her latest conviction in the Court of Appeal next month.

The former neonatal nurse denies attempting to murder a baby at the Countess of Chester Hospital in February 2016, but was found guilty in July and sentenced to a 15th life sentence.

In August 2023, Letby was found guilty of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six more babies, one of them twice.

The judges will consider her latest appeal on October 24.

Letby's attempt to challenge her original 14 convictions was rejected in May.

A public inquiry into the events surrounding Letby's crimes, chaired by Lady Justice Thirlwall, began at Liverpool Town Hall earlier this month.

The judge said the inquiry's hearings would be completed in early 2025 and she expected to release her findings in late fall of that year.

Earlier this month, Letby's new lawyer, Mark McDonald, told the BBC he intended to make an application to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC).

The CCRC investigates possible miscarriages of justice and can refer cases back to the Court of Appeal for further review.
