Houston police arrest several suspects in shootout with police officers

HOUSTON, Texas (KWTX) – Houston police have arrested three suspects after a police officer was shot around 9:50 a.m. on Sept. 17, according to a news release from the city of Houston.

The shooter, Raymond Perez, 35, is charged with aggravated assault on an officer, aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and illegal carrying of a weapon.

The other two suspects, Michael Perez, 38, and Brian A. Garcia Chavez, 18, are charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

According to police, officers responded to a burglary in progress at a home in the 7100 block of Alderney Drive. Upon arrival, officers located two of the suspects inside the home. While one of the suspects, later identified as Michael Perez, was taken into custody, the other allegedly came out of a back room of the home and began shooting at officers before fleeing the scene on foot. The third suspect, who was waiting in a vehicle, also fled the scene.

During the shooting, Officer S. Durfee was shot in the leg and later taken to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center for treatment.

The second suspect in the home, identified as Raymond Perez, was found about a block from the crime scene and taken into custody without incident. The third suspect, identified as Chavez, was found hours later in the 5800 block of Hollister Road and also taken into custody without incident.

The Houston Police Department's Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office are conducting further investigations as a precautionary measure following a reported officer-involved shooting within Houston city limits.
