Excavator driver allegedly attacked father in front of his daughters during an incident of aggression at the wheel on the Pittsburgh Bridge

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A Pittsburgh city employee is facing assault charges following a bizarre incident of road rage. A video taken by the victim's children was released Friday.

Donald Jones says not only his life has been changed forever, but so have those of his children, as they witnessed their father's alleged attack and even took out their cellphones to record the incident.

“It was extremely hard for me to take care of myself and take care of my children in this situation,” Jones said.

It started out as a normal day. Jones says he was driving to school with his daughters, ages 11 and 15, when he was behind a backhoe driven by city worker Paul Grguras on the Panther Hollow Bridge. Jones says he honked because Grguras pulled out.

Jones says the situation took a turn when Grguras immediately stopped the excavator.

“After I honked, I thought he was going to pull over to the side of the road and let me pass. Instead, he made a sharp left turn and cut me off in both lanes, preventing me from getting past him,” Jones said.

The argument escalated when Jones claimed Grguras broke his side mirror and sprayed wasp spray in his face. Jones' two children pulled out their cell phones and began recording the video. Jones says Grguras then yelled racist slurs at his children and even threatened to kill them.

“He called me and my children racist names and threatened to essentially physically harm them,” Jones said.

The argument ended when another city employee passing by intervened.

“I think it was because he was scared himself, and when we're scared, we try to defend ourselves,” said Grguras' attorney Phil DiLucente.

“I think there are better days ahead for all parties in this case, and I look forward to the preliminary hearing,” DiLucente added.

Grguras was suspended without pay. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 30.
