Man accused of attacking police officers with knife at Brownville subway station in court

The man who police say attacked them with a knife before being shot by police in a Brownsville subway station appeared before a judge on Friday.

Police said Derrell Mickles was shot when he attacked them with a knife at the Sutter Avenue subway station on Sunday in an attempt to evade subway fare.

Mickles pleaded not guilty in court on Friday, appearing virtually from his hospital bed.

Bail was set at $200,000 cash or $1.5 million surety.

“I still think the bail is exceptionally high. I have asked the court to consider parole. I believe if they had done that, he would still be appearing in court after he is released from the hospital – his condition is obviously very serious,” Mickles' attorney said.

Mickles' lawyer says he can no longer walk and pleaded not guilty to eight charges, including assault, illegal possession of a weapon and attempted assault on a police officer. Mickles rolled his eyes at times as the charges were read.

β€œAt that point, the defendant apparently had a blade in his hand after leaving the station,” the prosecutor said.

Four people, including an NYPD officer, were shot and killed Sunday afternoon when Mickles was driving too fast, according to police.

Officers said Mickles had a knife on him and refused to drop it when asked, so they used a taser twice, unsuccessfully.

Police say Mickles then attacked them with the knife, after which they opened fire.

The prosecution had initially requested bail of $750,000, but the judge found this amount to be too high.

Mickles' attorney pointed out that Mickles had been charged with a misdemeanor four times and had appeared in court on all but one occasion.
