Alabama police officer arrested and charged with domestic violence/strangulation

A Birmingham Police officer was arrested Friday following a domestic violence incident. On Thursday, a woman showed up at Birmingham Police headquarters to report an incident that occurred earlier that same day involving her “long-time on-off boyfriend,” Officer Justin Bisharat. By questioning both parties, detectives learned the woman and Bisharat, 28, were involved in a “physical altercation” on 4th Ave South in the Southside community. Bisharat was reportedly on duty during the incident, but not in a City of Birmingham police vehicle. Police say the victim suffered visible injuries. A Birmingham Police officer was arrested on Friday following an incident of domestic violence.

On Thursday, a woman showed up at BPD headquarters and reported an incident that occurred earlier that day involving her longtime boyfriend, Officer Justin Bisharat.

The agency's Internal Affairs Division then launched an investigation before referring the case to SVU investigators.

By interviewing both parties, investigators learned that the woman and 28-year-old Bisharat were involved in a “physical altercation” on 4th Ave South in the Southside neighborhood.

Bisharat was reportedly on duty but not in a Birmingham City Police vehicle during the incident. Police say the victim suffered visible injuries.

After being held in custody for 48 hours, Bisharat was arrested on Friday and charged with domestic violence/strangulation.

“The Birmingham Police Department responded immediately upon becoming aware of this incident and conducted a thorough investigation,” said Police Chief Scott Thurmond. “The Birmingham Police Department does not and will not tolerate this behavior.”

Bisharat is taken to the Jefferson County Jail where he is being held on $30,000 bail.
