Owens touchdown pass in overtime, Helvey kick, Narrows wins 21-20 over Giles | Sport

NARROWS, Va. — One night, Giles will get into an overtime battle and win it. But that wasn't the case Friday night.

Narrows quarterback Hunter Owens threw a 3-yard touchdown throw to Gavin Hazelwood in overtime and Cooper Helvey sealed the sack with his point-after touchdown kick, giving the Green Wave a 21-20 victory over their county rivals.

On the first possession of overtime, Trevor Ratcliffe scored an eight-yard scoot for a touchdown, but Conner Smith's kick attempt failed. Smith managed two PAT kicks in regulation time.

The Spartans, trailing 14-0 in the third quarter, finally scored on Ratcliffe's 1-yard TD plunge in the third quarter to cut the Green Wave's lead to 14-7. Ratcliffe, who rushed for 195 yards on 24 carries, broke free for a 69-yard run to tie the game 14-14 for the remainder of regulation.

Helvey, who led Narrows with 132 yards on 19 carries, started the scoring with his 60-yard run in the first quarter, but his PAT kick failed.

Owens gave the Green Waves some breathing room in the third period by hitting Elijah Knoetze with a 10-yard touchdown pass. Helvey made up for his miss with a 2-point conversion run for a 14-0 lead.

Owens completed eight of 22 pass attempts for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Hazlewood had two catches for 37 yards and Knoetze – who made the game-winning catch in Narrows' 2023 win over Giles – had two catches for 26 yards.
