Surveillance video shows argument that led to shooting of 4-year-old in Tamiami home – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

WEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – Recently released surveillance video and 911 calls captured the moments leading up to and immediately following a shooting in a west Miami-Dade neighborhood that left a 4-year-old boy hospitalized.

Miami-Dade Police units arrived at the scene of the shooting on Southwest 127th Court, near 12th Street, in the Tamiami neighborhood on July 27.

Months later, the surveillance video that started it all and the 911 calls from Hassell Oporta, the victim's mother, were released.

The surveillance footage shows that it all started with a fight between two men in front of the victim's house. In the middle of the fight, a gun falls to the ground.

The men are eventually separated, but one of them grabs his gun from the ground.

The video shows him returning to the neighborhood, raising his arm and firing several shots.

The bullets pierced vehicles, a trailer and two houses, including the one where the four-year-old was playing in his room.

Oporta's desperate cries for help described the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

“Someone shot and my God, my child was shot,” Oporta said.

“Your child was shot? Where was he shot?” asked the emergency dispatcher.

“Yes, in the ribs on the left side, I don’t know,” said Oporta

“How old, how old is he?” asked the dispatcher.

“Four, four years old,” said Oporta.

“Do you see a lot of blood coming out?” said the dispatcher.

“Yes, there is a lot of blood,” said Oporta.

While the two were talking on the phone, the child was heard calling “Mommy!” in the backyard.

The child was taken to hospital and treated for a graze on his side.

Oporta spoke to 7News about the incident a day after it happened.

“We were lucky. I had really scary thoughts about what could have happened. Thank God that didn't happen,” she said. “We were in the bedroom in bed. He was playing in the corner, and I just heard the shot, and I just looked in the closet, and he just started screaming, and he started [his side]and when I lifted up the blouse, there was a hole in it and he started bleeding.”

That same day, MDPD officers arrested 23-year-old Christopher Del Carpio in connection with the shooting.

In court, Miami-Dade District Court Judge Mindy S. Glazer found that there was reasonable suspicion.

“Attempted second degree murder,” she said.

Del Carpio is charged with three counts of attempted murder and, according to police, admitted to pulling the trigger.

He remains behind bars awaiting trial, which is scheduled to begin on October 28.
