Video shows an 8-year-old boy lurching in his mother's car on the way to the finish line

A new video shows the erratic route an 8-year-old Ohio girl took as she drove to Target alone after taking her mother's car.

Dashcam video captured by passing motorist Justin Kimery showed a white Nissan Rogue moving erratically on the road on Sunday, Sept. 15. Upon seeing the SUV swerving, the video showed Kimery contacting a dispatcher.

“There's a guy in a car, he's kind of right behind me,” Kimery can be heard saying in the recordings, according to NBC affiliate station WSAZ. “He's swerving everywhere, he's swerving everywhere, in all lanes.”

Later in the recording, as he continued driving on the same road behind the SUV and stayed in touch with the dispatcher, Kimery said, “It looks like a child.”

PEOPLE contacted Bedford Police on Wednesday, September 18, about the new dashcam footage and said they were aware of it. They had previously told PEOPLE they did not have dashcam video of the incident.

In an interview with The New York Times Kimery, who was on his way to work at the time, said in an article published on Tuesday, September 17, that he contacted authorities because he believed the driver was either impaired or under the influence of alcohol.

“I tried to signal her to slow down or stop if possible and she just kept walking,” Kimery wrote in an email to the newspaper.

In an incident report provided to PEOPLE on Monday, September 16, Bedford police confirmed that an 8-year-old girl was behind the wheel.

According to the report, officers arrived at a home in Bedford around 9:15 a.m. on Sept. 15 after being notified of a missing juvenile girl and a 2020 Nissan Rogue. Authorities said the girl's family members had last seen her about two hours earlier. Footage from a neighbor's Ring camera showed the girl leaving the home and then driving away alone in the SUV.

Police added in their report that the girl was later found safe and sound at a Target store in Bainbridge. Her relatives came to pick her up.

According to the police report, the girl told authorities that she knocked over a mailbox on the way to the store.

Fox affiliate WJW reported that police did not file criminal charges against the girl because of her age.

In a Facebook post, Bedford Police made a cheeky statement about the incident.

“An 8-year-old girl took her mom's car this morning and drove to Target in Bainbridge to shop. Fortunately, she made it and was immediately found by Bainbridge police,” police wrote.

“She's home safe now,” they continued. “I'm not sure what she bought or if she even got 5% off with her Target app. We let her finish her Frappuccino. We mean no harm.”

PEOPLE reached out to the girl's mother for further comment on Thursday, September 19.
