Wedding put on hold after groom injured in East Bay car crash

An East Bay couple's wedding has to be postponed after the groom-to-be is hit by a truck on his way home from work.

“They cut open the side of my leg right here, put in a plate and then put in eight screws,” Taylor Stevens of San Leandro told KTVU.

Stevens is in great pain after a serious car accident just weeks before his wedding.

“All I could think about was my fiancé, my mother, my father,” Stevens said.

The 24-year-old's Chevy truck was demolished after he turned around and saw loose cargo in the bed of his truck, after which he collided with a semi-trailer on Highway 24 in Lafayette on Tuesday evening.

“So unfortunately I'm not going to be able to walk down the aisle like this, and that sucks,” said Stevens, who was set to marry his fiancée Chelsea Fiero on Oct. 13.

“Oh God. It was a lot of different emotions,” Fiero said. “I'm so glad you're alive. I want to beat you up right now, too. I don't care about the wedding now. I just want to get him back on his feet.”

Stevens was released Friday evening from John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, where he underwent surgery to repair a broken leg and heel.

After at least four months of physical therapy, he is expected to make a full recovery. The traumatic experience has brought the two closer together.

“I don't think that was possible, but I love him even more,” Fiero said. “You're just my sweet little baby.”

“I believe everyone is here for a reason and we all have a purpose,” Stevens said. “Maybe my time hasn't come yet.”

The couple is looking to the future together and hopes that they will both be able to walk down the aisle sometime next year.

Stevens will not be able to return to his job as a field sales manager at Apollo Roofing Company for several months, so there is a Go Fund Me campaign to help him cover his expenses.
