UPDATE: ASU student charged with attempted first-degree murder

ASU student Kaci Sloan was taken into custody by ASU police after she allegedly stabbed another student during class around 11:45 a.m. Thursday morning, a university spokesperson said.

The incident occurred on the West Valley campus in the Sands Classroom Building, according to an ASU police report filed in North Valley Justice Court. When the victim entered Classroom 101, Sloan allegedly ran away from her desk and attacked the victim with a knife, according to a witness' statement in the police report.

The victim was stabbed multiple times on the left side of her body “without provocation or a word” before two witnesses intervened and physically restrained Sloan, the police report said. The witnesses consisted of about 13 people, including a professor and students, according to the report.

The victim's injuries were not life-threatening and she was taken to Banner Thunderbird Hospital where she underwent surgery, the police report said.

Officers and detectives searched Sloan's backpack and found a notebook with handwritten letters to family and friends, the police report said. The letters are said to have described Sloan's mental struggle, a prosecutor said during her initial court hearing.

According to the police report, Sloan admitted to coming to class “intending to hurt someone and planning the attack since the night before.” Sloan stated that she knew nothing about the victim other than her first name, according to the police report.

According to an ASU spokesperson, Sloan is currently charged with attempted intentional homicide, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, disrupting access to an educational facility and disorderly conduct in connection with the alleged incident.

According to the university, Sloan is being held in police custody on $250,000 bail.

“This is akin to a school shooting and the risk you pose to the community is extreme,” Judge Jane McLaughlin said during Sloan's sentencing hearing on Friday.

The incident is still under investigation by ASU PD investigators.

Sloan is a student studying business administration at the WP Carey School of Business. The alleged incident occurred before the start of a course on microeconomic principles that Sloan and the victim were both taking in the fall 2024 semester.
