Cyberpunk 2077 gets another Netflix anime spin-off

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a surprisingly good anime spin-off that proved that not all transmedia video game projects are doomed to mediocrity. So it is perhaps not surprising that Netflix and Cyberpunk2077 Creators CD Projekt Red are back to announce a new collaboration that will bring fans back to Night City for another neon-fueled adventure.

Today, the streaming platform’s social media account posted a short, cryptic teaser that simply showed the Netflix, CDPR and Cyberpunk logos followed by the words “Return to Night City.” That was enough to get people excited, although there is no clear evidence of what the thing it actually is. It is probably an animated series, and since there is no reference to Edge runnersit appears to be a new spin-off. Beyond that, however, it's anyone's guess what new stories will be written in the popular science fiction dystopia.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was the first attempt, and it was a good one. It appeared on Netflix in 2022, told the story of a new cast of characters and helped deepen Cyberpunk2077's world building just in time to take a victory lap in 2023 with its outstanding Phantom Liberty expansion. But CDPR said at the time that there wouldn't be a second season of the 10-episode miniseries, so it stands to reason that this new show will offer a different perspective on the game's nightmarish metropolis.
