Council supports Proposal 36 for theft and drugs penalties | News

The Chino City Council voted 5-0 on Tuesday to approve Proposition 36. A bill that would increase penalties for certain theft and drug offenses and reverse aspects of Proposition 47, which reclassified certain drug and theft offenses from felonies to misdemeanors, will be put on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Police Chief Kevin Mensen told the City Council that Proposition 36 would address three of Chino's biggest problems: homelessness, drug use and theft, which have increased since voters passed Proposition 47 in 2014. Under Proposition 47, shoplifting of goods valued at $950 or less and drug possession in general became misdemeanors.
