A Texas man involved in an unsolved 2021 case was arrested last week for the fatal stabbing attack of an Austin victim before being released on bail four days after being taken into custody.

According to Fox 7, Mithovar Christopher Antoine Jr., now 22, is accused of stabbing 23-year-old Nikolas Martinez to death in July 2021 near the victim's South Austin apartment complex.

On the day of the incident, Martinez was playing video games with his nephew and took a break to get laundry from the common room of his apartment complex before he was stabbed.

He then called 911 to report that he had been stabbed and drove himself to a nearby gas station to get help, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Martinez's parents said they were upset two years ago because so little information came to light about their son's killer.

“We know that nothing will help [him] back,” Martinez's father, Martin Martinez, told Fox 7. “Nothing is going to make it better, but just not knowing is killing us.”

“We believe it was just something random that happened and we don't know why,” Martinez's mother, Wendy Martinez, told the outlet. “So if anyone saw anything, just come forward.”

This June, Austin police received an anonymous tip saying they witnessed Antoine Jr. stabbing Martinez near a South Austin apartment complex, according to an arrest warrant, Fox 7 reported.

Police executed another search warrant and found that the suspect had been searching for newspaper articles related to the Austin stabbings just days after Martinez's death.

Police found Antoine Jr. in Temple last week, he was arrested and taken to the Bell County Jail. A judge set his bail at $150,000 and he was released from jail on bond four days later.

Bell County officials told Fox 7 the suspect was released without extradition to Travis County.

Antoine Jr. was arrested in the two years before Martinez's death for unauthorized use of a vehicle and burglary, according to court documents obtained by Fox 7. He was released from jail on bail two months before Martinez's murder.

Because he was on probation, Bell County could revoke it and seek additional warrants against him, which would put him back in prison.

A grand jury in Travis County has yet to indict Antoine Jr. in Martinez's murder.
