WATCH: Cougar quarterback John Mateer stars in WSU Apple Cup commercial | Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. – Following a three-touchdown, 245 passing yard performance last Saturday that helped bring the 116th Apple Cup trophy back to Pullman for the first time since 2021, quarterback John Mateer starred in a commercial sponsored and created by Coug-owned companies.

Mateer and several sponsors created a commercial to celebrate the Apple Cup, highlighting the legendary Cosmic Crisp apple, developed at Washington State University.

Sitting in the stands at Martin Stadium, Mateer eats a Cosmic Crisp apple and smiles proudly next to the Apple Cup trophy that head coach Jake Dickert said may not leave Pullman for a long time.

While the commercial is simple and sweet, the ad recognizes the hard work and dedication it took to bring the trophy back to the Palouse.

Mateer shone in the 24-19 victory in the Apple Cup, throwing for nearly 250 yards and a touchdown and also running for 62 yards and two scores.

Sponsors listed in the commercial include Marco Polo Bar and Grill, Pauley Law Group, Hurley Media Group and Cosmic Crisp. The video and sponsors were made possible and curated by the Cougar Collective.

Hurley Media Group, which created the video, said all proceeds from the video's sponsorship revenue went to the Cougar Collective, the NIL platform that pays WSU student-athletes to use their name, image and likeness in various ways.
