Rep. Jasmine Crockett holds DEI hearing to discuss Project 2025

Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett took aim at Republicans, including House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer of Kentucky, during a hearing Thursday that was reportedly called to detail GOP complaints about the Biden administration.

Crockett's comments came during a hearing titled “A Legacy of Incompetence: Consequences of the Policy Failures of the Biden-Harris Administration.” Comer opened the meeting by calling the current Biden-Harris administration a failure.

“Everything Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have touched has failed,” he said.

Also on the witness list was Federal Communications Commission Commissioner Brendan Carr, who has held the post since August 2017, when he was appointed by former President Donald Trump. Carr has also been criticized by Democrats in recent months for his involvement in drafting a chapter of Project 2025.

Carr spoke about the Biden administration's Broadband Equity Access and Deployment program, announced by the White House last year. The goal of the program is to provide American households with better internet access.

Carr told the House committee that the program was just another DEI initiative.

“The $42 billion program led by Vice President Harris will be used to push a climate agenda, DEI requirements, technology bias, price controls, preferences for government-run networks, and rules that will undoubtedly lead to wasteful overbuilding,” Carr said.

Crockett responds to DEI comments

Later in the hearing, Crockett responded to Carr's comments about DEI.

“This election is the best example of why you're all so afraid of diversity, equality and inclusion. Because then you can't have a simple-minded, underqualified white man somehow rising up. Instead you have to look at the qualified black woman on the other side,” Crockett said.

She then blamed Comer, the committee's chairman, and called the meeting “an example of what waste, fraud and abuse look like.”

“The only reason we're having this hearing is because someone was hurt in a debate, and I don't understand why we're wasting taxpayer money,” Crockett said. “Next time, tell your big boy to come and be ready to deal with the woman in the room who will hopefully be the next president of the United States.”

Crockett questions Project 2025

The Democratic minority on the Oversight Committee called one witness to testify at Thursday's hearing: Sky Perryman, CEO of Democracy Forward, a nonprofit that says it has “taken the Trump administration to court more than 100 times.”

Crockett asked Perryman about Trump's possible connection to the controversial conservative political plan.
