Lexington has seen a spike in overdoses this week. What the health department wants you to know.

A recent spike in overdoses prompted the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department to issue a public warning.

Between September 17 and 20, 24 non-fatal overdoses were reported in Lexington, the health department announced Friday, according to the Overdose Detection Mapping Application System.

The health department did not provide any information about which drug might have caused the overdose.

Especially if you or someone you know has a substance use disorder, you should consider carrying naloxone with you, as it can reverse an opioid overdose.

“Fentanyl has been found in all types of regulated medications, so naloxone may help regardless of the medication taken,” the health department said.

Naloxone is available free of charge to anyone who needs it through the Health Department's Harm Reduction Program.

Individuals can pick up a naloxone kit at the Health Department's Dr. Rice C. Leach Community Room at 650 Newtown Pike on Mondays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 to 6:30 p.m.

“A lesson of 10 to 15 minutes is enough to provide the community with an important tool,” says the Ministry of Health in a press release.

People should also not consume drugs alone, but should watch out for others and call 911 if they suspect an overdose, the health department said.
