Police and sheriff investigate fatal shooting of VTA employee at San Jose bus depot

A Valley Transportation Authority employee was shot and killed Friday night at the VTA Chaboya Division Yard in the 2200 block of South 7th Street, near Costco and the County Fairgrounds.

Authorities did not release the victim's identity today, saying only that the male transit worker was pronounced dead at the scene in the bus terminal parking lot, having suffered “at least one” gunshot wound.

San Jose police received a 911 call about the shooting at 9:40 p.m. Friday.

Friday's incident was the third in recent years involving weapons and transportation workers at a VTA facility.

Police and Santa Clara County Sheriff's investigators did not release any further information about the incident or whether any suspects were in custody or on the run. There were no reports of more than one victim.

The VTA was rocked one morning more than three years ago when a VTA employee shot and killed eight co-workers at the Guadalupe Light Rail Yard and then turned the gun on himself. About a year after that mass shooting, on May 26, 2021, the VTA destroyed that Northside rail maintenance facility.

Then in June 2022, a VTA employee was arrested without incident after threatening violence at the San Jose bus depot.

VTA announced today that it has increased its security presence at the Chaboya Bus Depot and all other VTA facilities “to ensure the safety and well-being of all employees and the community.” Mental health professionals are available to employees and their families.
