Dentist Bart Corbin shot Jennifer Corbin and Dolly Hearn

Buford, an upscale community in Gwinnett County, Georgia, is known for its resort atmosphere. But on December 4, 2004, the community's bucolic bubble burst.

At 7:30 a.m. that day, a 911 operator responded to a desperate call from a resident who reported that her neighbor, 33-year-old Jennifer Corbin, had been shot. When emergency responders arrived, they found Jennifer in the master bedroom, lying in bed with a gun next to her.

“It was an older style Smith & Wesson revolver,” said Mike Pearson, a special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, in the “Twice as Deadly” episode of The real murders of AtlantaBroadcast Saturdays at 21:00/20:00 on oxygen.

The time of death was estimated to be between midnight and 3 a.m. A bottle of wine was on the nightstand next to the bed, along with divorce papers. Her husband, Bart Corbin, had recently filed for divorce and wanted the house, custody of their two sons and child support, said Linda Looney, a former news anchor for radio station WVEE.

The evidence pointed to a possible suicide. “We could see where the gunshot wound entered in the back of the head,” said Edward Restrepo, a former detective with the Gwinnett County Police Department.

“Women don't commit suicide with weapons and there was no letter,” Restrepo added. “That seemed strange to us.”

Was a woman's suicide staged? An old revolver confuses investigators

Jennifer Corbin found dead by her 7-year-old son

Investigators searched the neighborhood and questioned Jennifer's then-seven-year-old son, Dalton. “He slept through the shooting when he came into her room that morning and found her dead in her bed,” Looney said.

The boy ran to his neighbor's house and expressed concern for his mother when he spotted her. At this point, the neighbor checked on Jennifer and immediately called 911.

Jennifer's sister Heather, who lived in the area, arrived at the scene. She was adamant that her sister would not kill herself. “She said Jennifer was happy and she loved her boys,” Looney explained on The real murders of Atlanta.

Heather told officers she tried unsuccessfully to contact her brother-in-law, Bart Corbin.

Who are Jennifer and Bart Corbin?

Investigators discovered that Bart was a successful dentist who coached his son's baseball team.

Jennifer worked part-time at a daycare center. “She was a great mother. She was a great wife and a good listener,” Looney said. But she and Bart had marital problems and were living apart.

Investigators eventually made contact with Bart, who said he had spent the night with his brother Bobby. “They informed him that Jennifer had died,” said former Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter. “He dropped the phone. They could hear vomiting in the background.”

Autopsy report reveals contradictory details of apparent staged suicide

Results of Jennifer Corbin’s autopsy

The medical examiner confirmed that Jennifer had been shot in the back of the head. The entry wound did not indicate suicide.

The trajectory of the shot wasn't the only indication that Jennifer hadn't inflicted her fatal wound on herself. “No fingerprints were found on the gun and there were no gunshot marks on her hand,” Porter said.

It was clear to investigators that this was a murder case and that the shooter had staged the crime scene to make officers believe that Jennifer had taken her own life.

Bart Corbin interrogated by police

Accompanied by his lawyer, Bart came to the police station for questioning. When asked about his whereabouts at the time of the murder, Bart said he went to a restaurant with friends and drove to his brother's house at around 1:30 a.m.

Investigators found no blood or bodily fluids on Bart's clothing, which he willingly handed over. They also determined that he had not suffered any defensive injuries. A gunshot residue test on Bart's hands was negative. Bart was allowed to go on his way.

Jennifer Corbin's online relationship

Investigators found that Jennifer had participated in an online role-playing game before the murder. She regularly chatted with a person named “Chris.” “They started talking about how they were falling in love,” Porter said.

However, two months after the online affair began, “Chris” revealed that she was actually a woman named Anita who was married and had children. Despite this revelation, the online affair continued.

Investigators discovered that Jennifer and Anita had exchanged messages shortly before the murder. They also discovered that Anita was in Missouri at the time of the shooting and had nothing to do with the crime.

The Dolly Hearn case comes to light

Jennifer's murder made headlines. An informant contacted police and asked them to look into the Richmond County investigation into the death of Dolly Hearn, who had gone to dental school with Bart and dated him.

On June 6, 1990, Hearn was found dead in her Augusta, Georgia, apartment with a gun next to her. She had been shot with a .38-caliber revolver, the same type of weapon used in Jennifer's case. “She was shot in almost the same place in the back of the head,” Porter said.

Investigators in Gwinnett County found that Bart and Hearn's relationship deteriorated after she turned down his marriage proposal. Investigators also found that Bart was questioned in Richmond County about Hearn's death.

“What was missing from the beginning in Hearn's case was the ability to prove conclusively that this was murder,” said Scott Peebles, a former detective with the Richmond County Sheriff's Department. Bart had a rock-solid alibi and there was no physical evidence directly linking him to her death.

Investigators target Bart Corbin

Detectives from Gwinnett and Richmond counties believed Bart was responsible for not one but two murders disguised as suicides. Hearn's case was reopened and detectives from both counties joined forces.

Investigators tapped Bart's phone and discovered that he was having an affair with his dental hygienist. Police ruled her out as a suspect. They focused on cracking Bart's seemingly watertight alibi.

Bart had said he went to a restaurant with friends the morning his wife was found dead and drove to his brother's house around 1:30 a.m. That means he was about 15 miles from his own home during the time between midnight and 3 a.m. when Jennifer was murdered.

But information from cell towers indicated that he was near his house at 1:25 a.m., not at his brother's house. “That invalidated his alibi,” Restrepo said.

Bart Corbin arrested

On December 22, 2004, Bart was arrested for Hearn's murder. Investigators searched his phone records for possible clues to the .38 caliber revolver used to kill his wife. This led investigators to the fact that Bart had driven to Troy, Alabama a week before Jennifer's murder.

They found that Bart's old friend Richard Wilson lived in Troy. Wilson, a gun collector, told police he gave Bart a .38 gun that matched the one used to kill his wife, Jennifer. “That was the nail in the coffin for Bart Corbin,” Restrepo said.

Bart was charged with Jennifer's murder on January 5, 2005.

Porter offered Bart a deal. The prosecutor would take the death penalty off the table if Bart admitted in court that he had murdered Jennifer and Hearn. Bart agreed to the deal and was sentenced to two life sentences, NBC News reported.

“He murdered two women he claimed to love, one of whom was the mother of his two sons,” said Jane Henson, Hearn's aunt. “It's just very frightening to think what he could do to another woman.”
