St. Benedict's hosts 80s-style crime-themed charity dinner

St. Benedict's Homeless Shelter hopes to take the community back to the “Decade of Decadence” with its “I Love the '80s to Death Murder Mystery Dinner!” next month. The cast of Cincinnati's American Immersion Theater will present the show, and guests are encouraged to dress in classic 1980s attire.

The dinner is scheduled for October 25th at 6:00 p.m. at the RiverPark Center.

“This is a new and exciting event that I'm sure will be well received. I mean, who wouldn't want to bring back '80s music, big hair, leg warmers and neon clothes,” said Susan Law, St. Benedict's director of advancement. “Everyone seems to be streaming a whodunit crime show or podcast lately, so this came at just the right time.”

The show is based on a death during an epic dance in the 1980s.

“Tensions build backstage and spill into the spotlight when a murder occurs that the audience must solve,” says a press release about the event.

In addition to the theatrical production, chef Maria Kelly of Nona's Market will provide a meal. A bar will also be available.

“I really think it will sell out. It's a fun show and dinner at a great venue. You can't ask for anything better on a Friday night,” Law said.

Law said the event is a major source of revenue for the nonprofit, which receives 90 percent of its funding from fundraisers, local grants and donations.

“Our community is aware that homelessness is one of the biggest issues. St. Benedict's does phenomenal work and we rely heavily on these fundraisers to help with that,” she said. “We have such a generous community that always steps in when we are in need. Law expects the production to become an annual fundraiser.
