4 dead, dozens injured after multiple gunmen fired at 'people outdoors' in Birmingham Five Points South

Magnolia Avenue South here in the Five Point South District. The call was updated that multiple people were shot. Our officers arrived on scene to discover two adult males and one adult female laying unconscious on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound. We also began to locate several more gunshot victims in and around the area. Additionally, several victims arrived at various hospitals throughout our city of Birmingham. Firefighters arrived on scene in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue. Our paramedics pronounced the two adult males and the one adult female deceased at the scene. I just received information from our team that a quarter of the victim was pronounced deceased at UAB Hospital. So from speaking with our officers and our detectives, we have a total of four dead victims so far. We have dozens of gunshot victims from this area. I'm told at least four of those gunshot victims are life threatening. The others have various injuries. Here's what we know so far from this investigation: We believe multiple shooters fired multiple shots at a group of *** people in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue. No one is in custody and we cannot stress enough to the public how important it is for us to have information for this investigation. We have contacted our partners at the *** TF, we have contacted our partners at the FBI. They will have a *** plethora of law enforcement agencies assisting the Birmingham Police Department and rest assured that we will do everything we can to make sure that we find, identify and hunt down whoever was ever responsible for the prey on our people this morning. The Birmingham Fire Department said they transported eight from the scene. OK. So we have three dead at the scene. Yes, ma'am. Eight were transported from the scene, one of them we believe died at UAB Hospital. Yes, ma'am. How many others are there right now? We have dozens of gunshot victims that are in various hospitals in situations like this. When you commit to a *** number, that number usually changes. So we can say with *** fact that we have dozens of gunshot victims from this area, more than 24 unknown numbers, but we have dozens of victims. We're not going to commit to a *** number right now. But when we finalize everything, we will share that number with our media partners. Was that group of people outside the *** store here, where exactly were they? We're told that all of the victims were outdoors on the *** sidewalk or street. So this group of shooters shot at these victims while they were outdoors. We're not told that this happened in any store. This was either on the *** sidewalk or *** city street, it was a *** drive-by shooting with the shooters also on foot. Our investigators are working to confirm if the shooters walked toward the victims or drove by in a *** vehicle. And that's why we need the public's help. In an investigation like this, there is no information that is too insignificant. Do you have a *** number of shots? We'll just say there were multiple shots fired. Do you know why this group was there? Was there a *** party or an event on that street? It's just a *** beautiful night on *** Saturday. This is one of the most popular entertainment districts in Birmingham, so you can always expect *** crowds. Um, right now, our focus is on getting these shooters off the street. We can't stress enough how important that is if you are *** business owner and you have your *** business in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue or the surrounding areas. We know that if you own a *** business in the Five Point South District in and around the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue, this area is packed with cameras. We need you. Witnesses said that, uh, many of the victims were lining up to get into the *** hookah lounge in that corridor. Is that correct? Yes, ma'am. There are several *** businesses in and around that area. So the night of the murder in Billy Bryant Park, that area typically had *** a lot of foot traffic. Yes, ma'am. Um, several officers left the area and came here to *** fight in the exact same spot. Is that *** hot spot? Our officers know this area as a *** place where people congregate because there are local businesses nearby that they prefer. And this murder showed us that with our stores *** we have tons of resources in the form of surveillance cameras. If you have *** businesses in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue, we need you again because we know your surveillance footage captured something in a second. I'll get Megan real quick and I'll get you, Miss Carol, and I don't think we have any arrests from the other case. How do we focus on this case? And that one? And, and what do you say about *** the second mass murder in the city in *** months? Well, first of all, we're pooling all of our resources. We have a great resource with the Birmingham Police Department's Real-Time Crime Center that we draw on for every crime. But there's nothing the public can do to help. Mayor Randall said it best this week: We're seeing far too many disputes being decided with bullets, and I think that speaks exactly to what our mayor said just recently, which is that ignition switches were probably used. Do you have anything to confirm that? Do you think it was more than one gun? How many shooters? Good question. We're investigating that there were multiple shootings, and we're investigating whether ignition switches may have been used, which shows how important that is. We're getting anyone who has that in their arsenal off our streets. Our focus right now is on that, but I'll follow up on the information for you. If you remember the mass shooting in July, we were able to pull together some resources that we have technologically available to us, and we were actually able to set up a specific area where people could send video evidence. We're working on providing that for our community right now. Just after 11 p.m., our officers received the order to shoot. And after that, several victims came in, and let me close with that in these situations. As far as our response, often the focus is on the Birmingham Police Department. And as far as our performance tonight, it shows you that the women and men of Birmingham Fire Rescue Service and the women and men of UAB Hospital are absolutely amazing, and that is a reflection of what they are going through. Often the focus is on us as a whole, but rarely do we get the opportunity to publicly thank Birmingham Fire Rescue and UAB Hospital for the amazing work they do and the stress and trauma that comes with it. Birmingham police say four people have died and dozens of gunshot victims have been reported after multiple gunmen opened fire on “people outdoors” on Saturday night.

It happened shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday night in Birmingham Five Points South.

According to police, no one is currently in custody.

When police arrived, two men and a woman were found unconscious with gunshot wounds. Then, more gunshot victims were found. These three victims died at the scene, and another died in the hospital.
