Shooting in Birmingham leaves “several” victims, police say

Four people were killed and dozens injured in a shooting in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday evening.

Police said officers responded to reports of a serious shooting. “Officers are on scene where multiple people have been shot and there may be multiple victims,” ​​Birmingham police wrote in a post to X.

The shooting occurred in the Five Points South neighborhood, the post continued.

ABC News affiliate station WBMA in Birmingham reported that at least four people were killed and dozens injured in the shooting. At least four of the injured were critically injured, according to WBMA.

According to WBMA, the shooting occurred around 11 p.m. Saturday night in the busy Five Points South neighborhood.

Three of the four victims died at the scene of the accident, the WBMA said. The fourth victim died in hospital.

Investigators said they have made no arrests and believe there were multiple shooters. Police are investigating whether a gun with a so-called “switch” that allows a semi-automatic weapon to fire more quickly was used in the shooting, WBMA said.

Birmingham police have asked the FBI and ATF for assistance in the investigation, WBMA reported. Authorities are also seeking information from witnesses.

“There is no greater resource than the public,” said Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald. “We will do everything we can to make sure that we track down, identify and bring to justice the person responsible for the raids on our people this morning.”
