NEW DELHI: India's veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has further etched his name in cricket history by beating Australian legend Shane Warne's record of 37 Five-wicket hauls In Test Cricketwho scored his last five goals in December 2006.
Ashwin's remarkable 6-88 in the second innings helped India to a convincing 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test at Chepauk, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
With this performance, Ashwin moved into second place among bowlers with most five-wicket hauls, equalling Warne's tally. Only Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan, with an incredible 67 five-wicket hauls, is ahead of him. Ashwin, who did not take a wicket in Bangladesh's first innings but contributed a crucial century with the bat, burst into life in the second innings and dismantled the visitors' batting line-up. Chasing an improbable target of 515, Bangladesh were bowled out for 234, with only captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (82) offering any significant resistance.
Ashwin's brilliant performance with the ball decided the game for India and brought him level with Warne, further cementing his reputation as one of the best spinners in cricket history.
