Driver dies in car crash on H-3 motorway due to burning car

On Saturday morning, one person died in a serious car accident on the H-3 freeway, which resulted in dark clouds of smoke rising from the tunnel toward Kaneohe and caused traffic delays for hours.

Honolulu Fire Department officials said firefighters responded to a 911 call at 10:14 a.m. reporting a car crash on the H3 freeway near the Harano Tunnels. Three fire department units and 10 firefighters responded and found a single vehicle engulfed in flames, the official said.

The fire was extinguished at 10:38 a.m. and the driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was found dead, authorities said.

Emergency medical personnel declared the person dead. The person's gender and approximate age were not disclosed.

State Department of Transportation officials said the Kaneohe-bound lanes of H-3 were closed for about five hours while police investigated. All lanes were reopened before 4 p.m.

Honolulu police have not released any details about the accident or the victim.

Correction: The Kaneohe-bound lanes of H-3 were closed today, not the Halawa-bound lanes as reported in an earlier version of this story.
