Carmel Gat's family finds no consolation in the killing of her murderers by the IDF

“Revenge is no consolation,” the family of slain hostage Carmel Gat said on Saturday in response to the IDF's statement that they had killed two of the Hamas terrorists holding Gat, as well as five other hostages who were murdered in captivity shortly before IDF troops reached them.

Gat was held together with Almog Sarousi, Alex Lubanov, Uri Danino, Eden Yerushalmi and Hersh Goldberg-Polin. The six survived months in captivity and were murdered in captivity shortly before IDF troops reached the place where they were being held.

Three of them were on the list of those who would be released in the first round of a hostage deal, according to Israeli media reports.

Gat's family thanked the IDF troops “who risked their lives for 11 months under impossible conditions.” The family added that it was no consolation to them that the two terrorists were killed by IDF troops.

“Carmel wouldn't have cared if her killers or her mother's killers were alive or dead. She would have wanted to know that the hostages came home alive,” her family said.

“The answer to death is no longer death”

“The answer to Carmel's murder is not revenge on the murderers. The answer to death is not more death. It is life.”

The family said the response to Gat's death must be an agreement that allows the hostages to return home and prevents a regional escalation.

“That is the difference between us and our enemies – they sanctify death, we sanctify life.”

Israel's victory will be measured by the return of the hostages and not by how many terrorists are killed, the family concluded.
