Four persons were arrested in Edamalaipatti Pudur for allegedly misusing eggs supplied for the government's food programme for children in government schools. A tip-off prompted food safety officials led by District Food Safety Officer R. Rameshbabu to inspect a local hotel on Sunday.

During inspection, officials found that five of the eggs had the official stamp. When questioned, 61-year-old hotel owner Jeenathkubura admitted that her sister Salma, 66, had bought two cartons of eggs from Sathya, 43, an Anganwadi worker.

Further investigation revealed that Sathya's husband Raghuraman, who had a subcontract to supply eggs for the Anganwadi meal programme in Manikandam block since 2007, had diverted some of them to the hotel. All four persons were arrested by the Edamalaipatti Pudur police.
