The drivers accepted the applause on the podium, so now is a good time to remind you that the next GP is the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on the weekend of October 18-20.

A short break before things really heat up and the last six races of the season begin.

“It’s always hard here, very warm … and I'm looking forward to a nice break,” says a visibly exhausted and disappointed Verstappen.

“A few too many near misses,” says winner Norris, looking back. “The car was great, we were flying the whole race, still hard but a lot of fun, I'm still sweating. It's nice that Oscar is on the podium here too, he drove well today.”

George Russell finished fourth, Charles Leclerc fifth and Lewis Hamilton sixth, while Spanish duo Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso took the rest of the points, along with Nico Hülkenberg and Sergio Perez, who finished ninth and tenth respectively.

Thank you, Daniel.

“Good strategy,” was Oscar Piastri's message to the McLaren team over the radio. It's another podium finish for the Australian, Norris is the winner and Verstappen comes in second.

I'm afraid I must go now as I have to attend a funeral. Here's Dominic Booth to chill with you as we reflect on the race and look forward to the next one.

Daniel Ricciardo, who may be driving his last race, grabs the point for the fastest lap! Who knows how decisive this will be at the end of the season? But for now, let's celebrate the title fight that we and the sport deserve. Verstappen's lead at the top has shrunk to 52 points.

Round 62/62 Norris made an excellent start and was able to maintain the lead into the first corner; from then on it was a real process.

share

Round 61/62 Norris' McLaren is at supersonic speed; another fastest lap gives him a lead of 21.9 seconds as he begins his final lap.

share

Round 60/62 Norris drives smoothly, Magnussen retires (it would have been funny if he had done so while still holding the fastest lap) and Ricciardo makes a third change, perhaps in the hope of securing a fastest lap prize.

share

Round 59/62 Can anyone do a faster lap than Norris? Leclerc has relatively young tires, but he has to get past Russell first. He has DRS in that respect, but Russell is killing him.

share

Round 58/62 Ultimately, it seems like Verstappen is doing enough to come home this season, but it doesn't look like his car has a win left in it, so if Norris qualifies well, he has a very real chance of taking the win. Oh, and Leclerc is giving Russell a hard time trying to snatch fourth place.

share

Round 57/62 Norris puts an exclamation mark next to his victory, the symbol for the fastest lap is again next to his name. He will start to believe.

Round 56/62 Norris again sets the fastest lap but knows that even though he has already raced this weekend and clipped the wall twice, he was lucky today and he may not be so lucky next time.

Round 55/62 The top seven now seem to be set, with the smallest gap being 3.25 seconds between Leclerc (fifth) and Russell (fourth). The most remarkable thing about this race is how routinely Norris managed it.

share

Round 54/62 Norris is racing on, but Magnussen, who is last, has just set a fastest lap. But just as I'm about to suggest the leader come in, he beats the time anyway, having one stop in front of Verstappen.

share

Round 53/62 Verstappen is now far enough ahead of Piastri to not have to fear an attack; if the lights had failed, he would probably have finished second.

  1. Norris

  2. Verstappen

  3. Piastri

  4. Russell

  5. Leclerc

  6. Hamilton

  7. Sainz

  8. Alonso

Round 52/62 Lando, man! Another fastest lap means he leads by 28.650, and the extra point you get for that is a decent plus in the overall picture – especially in races like this where the winner is decided from the first corner.

share

Round 51/62 It didn't last long: Leclerc overtakes Hamilton and is in fifth place; Norris sets another fastest lap and enjoys life to the fullest. Magnussen, on the other hand, hits the wall and loses a tire. I don't think there will be a safety car because the car makes it into the pits.

share

Round 50/62 Leclerc, fourth, is 1.423s behind Hamilton, fifth, and I would expect them to swap places before the end of the race. He is absolutely on top form, the gap has narrowed to 0.415 in the time it takes me to type.

share

Round 49/62 Maybe he should hit the wall more often! Nozza sets a new fastest lap, which shows us how refined his car is, if we didn't already know that, but also that he may have been concentrating on the situation at the wall because he drifted. Cav won't be impressed.

share

Round 48/62 Um. Norris hits the wall a second time and again gets away. He has to think about that because it wasn't a glancing blow and on another day it could have cost him the race.

share

Round 47/62 Leclerc, sixth, is setting the fastest lap, and even without a pit stop, Norris could still have another go later when his fuel tank is almost empty.

  1. Norris

  2. Verstappen

  3. Piastri

  4. Russell

  5. Hamilton

  6. Leclerc

  7. Sainz

  8. Alonso

  9. Hulkenberg

  10. Perez

share

Round 46/62 Piastri is 18.709s behind Verstappen and may just have time to challenge for second place. It would be an entertaining move, as Norris could really use reducing the gap to the top by more than seven points.

share

Round 45/62 Piastri has to get past Russell… and the Mercedes has nothing on the McLaren! He finishes third and has a good chance of his third podium in a row.

share

Round 44/62 McLaren could consider pitting Norris for fresh tyres and taking away Piastri's fastest lap point. If he currently wins every race from pole and also every fastest lap point, and Verstappen finishes second behind him, they will start the final weekend level at the top.

share

Round 43/62 Ferrari is telling Sainz to let Leclerc pass and he does as Piastri sets a fastest lap. Norris won't like that because he wants the bonus point. But he leads by 23.970s and I'm sure he would have taken that.

share

Round 42/62 Another Fastest lap for Norris as he pushes the field hard; Piastri closes in on Russell and loses a second in one lap, so it will be a battle with a gap of 2.621 in three laps.
