John Mulaney mocks San Francisco and Tech Bros during Dreamforce set

Comedian John Mulaney poked fun at techies and AI obsessives during his closing performance at the annual Dreamforce conference in San Francisco this week.

The stand-up comedian didn't mince his words as he took aim at the approximately 45,000 attendees. The three-day Salesforce event is an annual conference that markets itself as the “world's largest AI event.” This year's program featured several industry icons as speakers, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Salesforce co-founder Marc Benioff.

Last year, Seth Meyers poked fun at the contestants and this year, Mulaney took over the baton.

The comedian delivered a 45-minute performance in which he poked fun at everything from the city of San Francisco to the conference attendees themselves, the San Francisco Standard reported.

The comedian was pondering why a city that had “failed humanity so miserably” was chosen to host a conference on the future of artificial intelligence, the outlet said.

The city has struggled to recover from the pandemic. Last year, San Francisco's office vacancy rate was among the highest of any major U.S. metropolitan area following a wave of job cuts in the technology sector.

On Thursday, Dreamforce committed to holding the conference in San Francisco for at least three more years – a major victory for the city.

Mulaney's jibes extended beyond the city's borders; according to The Standard, he saved plenty of fodder for the tech crowd, poking fun at their convoluted job titles, professional dress codes and replaceability.

“Can AI sit there in a fleece vest?” Mulaney asked the crowd. “Can't AI go to events and spend all day in a bar?”

The comedian chatted nonstop to the audience throughout the performance, suggesting that several audience members were working on projects that were “okay” but spent their days trying to make them sound “bigger” than they are, The Standard reported.

“You're vice president of customer success?” he asked one person, according to the outlet. “Congratulations on your position, which didn't exist five years ago!”

Mulaney also pointed out the stereotypically vague language often heard in conversations between senior engineers.

“The fact that there are 45,000 'trailblazers' here can no longer detract from the title,” he said, according to the outlet.

After his appearance on “Dreamforce,” Mulaney also played a one-off performance at the Golden Gate Theater in San Francisco, where he gave a few additional references to the City by the Bay.

“San Francisco has never been a good city, and that’s a good thing,” Mulaney said, according to SFGate.

The comedian has been back on stage in recent years after a stay in rehab in 2020.
