Two men arrested after chase, one police officer injured

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – Two men were arrested and a deputy was injured following a chase on Saturday, September 21.

A Henry County Sheriff's Office deputy spotted a white Buick at 2:11 p.m., the driver of which was suspected of being involved in a theft at a local business, according to the Henry County Sheriff's Office.

When the officer ran the license plate on the vehicle, the information on it did not match the vehicle, officials said. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, officials said.

Officers said the driver was speeding and driving recklessly as the pursuit continued on Greensboro Road.

As the driver entered the intersection of Main Street and Greensboro Road, he turned left onto Main Street, according to officials.

According to officials, the pursuit continued, with the driver turning left onto Highway 87 toward North Carolina.

As the driver approached the intersection of Vista View Lane and Highway 87, an officer performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT maneuver) on the driver, causing the vehicle to slide into an embankment, officials said. During the PIT maneuver, the driver's vehicle rolled forward, causing the officer's leg to become trapped between the driver's vehicle and the patrol car.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, Carlton Haizlip, ran on foot, according to officials. Officials say they attempted to pursue Haizlip but lost sight of him. Officials also determined that Haizlip had allegedly stolen a 2006 Saturn.

Carlton Haizlip, 35, of Eden, NC, was later found and arrested in Myrtle Beach and is awaiting extradition to Henry County, according to officials. Haizlip was charged with fleeing from police, assault and theft of a motor vehicle. He was arrested by Myrtle Beach police without incident, according to officials. Officials say the 2006 Saturn was also found in Myrtle Beach.

Two other people were found in the suspect's vehicle, officials said, including a white male named Ronald Haizlip and a white female. Officials say Ronald Haizlip had an outstanding warrant out of Eden, NC for fleeing from police. He was arrested and is being held at the Henry County Adult Detention Center, where he is awaiting extradition.

According to officials, the woman was released without being charged in the incident.

The injured officer was transported to SOVA Health in Martinsville where he was treated for minor injuries and released. He is expected to make a full recovery.
